WWDC 2006 Keynote Speech

August 7, 2006 · 1 Comment

Tune in this afternoon for commentary on Apple CEO Steve Job’s
keynote speech at the World Wide Developers Conference.

It has begun…

I should credit my source while they’re talking about sales and such…

Steve Schiller is taking the first few introductions…

Mac Pro: We have confirmation of the much anticipated Mac Pro which finishes off Apple’s transition from PowerPC chips to Intel. The Mac Pro will ship with Woodcrest processors – all dual core based on the intel core 2 duo. Up to 3 GHz – nice! The Mac Pro’s case is staying the same except for the addition of a second optical drive. There will also be room for up to 2TB of storage. Holy cow. Not that I’ll see that kind of hard drive in the near future. The Pro runs a lot cooler which means it has more room for expansion (like the 4 500GB hard drives you can put in it). They’re also dropping the price by quite a bit. The base price (there’s only one base unit) is $2499. To get the same specs from Dell you’d have to spend over $1000 more than on the Mac Pro. They start shipping today.

Xserve: Looks like they’ve completely redesigned this one. Up to 5TB of storage and it’s supposedly 5x as fast as its predecessor.

Steve Jobs is taking the stage again to talk about OSX.

MacOSX

They’re taking some time to make fun of Vista and comparing features side-by-side. OSX vs. Vista. I can’t wait to see this in the webcast. If you can’t innovate, impersonate.

It looks like they aren’t going to demo any of the new OSX features so thatthe competition doesn’t get a head start at copying them, but they’re going to explain the features.

  1. Support for 64-bit programs
  2. Time Machine automated backup software. It will back up everything or single files to a harddrive or network and will allow you to recover over-written files by entering in a date and time or choosing the file or finder window from a timeline. Time Machine works for the finder, iPhoto, 3rd party apps…
  3. Boot Camp will ship with Leopard. Boot Camp allows you to install and run Windows on a Mac. (If, you know, you’re into that sort of thing)
  4. Spaces – the ability to create differet “work spaces” or virtual desktops
  5. Spotlight – Spotlight will now be able to search through other networked Macs (if you have permission of course)
  6. New core animations
  7. Universal access improved with what sounds like a pretty amazing voice synthesizer.
  8. Mail: Stationary (industry standard HTML mail), To Do lists, and notes (instead of emailing yourself to make notes in a separate box). There will be checkboxes on emails to turn them into To Dos and you’ll be able to set priorities and alerts. Actually, any app can create To Dos. Mail will also have a photo browser window to let you add pictures more easily.
  9. Dashboard -Dashcode for developers, users can easily make a widget out of any part of any website.
  10. iChat – multiple logins, visibility, animated icons, video recording, and tabbed chats, iChat theater. Show slideshows, keynote presentations and use Photo Booth effects

And that’s all. Man, I’m such a dork…
